Economics for 5 year olds

Economics for 5 year olds

Kids are amazing! We should never forget that we used to be them ourselves.

Sometimes, us adults need to connect with the love and simplicity of the way an undamaged child approaches the world to see where we may have been corrupted by the "narrative of survival" in an artificial "Old Game".

Give this a read for yourself first, and then take it for a test drive with any kiddos in your life! What did they have to say? Share it with others if you have an "aha moment" along the way. When did your generally-accepted "adulting narratives" take over? It's not too late to change our story and make a better one!

Story for kids begins here:

Written in a voice to be read to 3 - 5 year olds.

We have a big world ๐ŸŒŽ , with lots of people. Some are young like you, and some are older. But everyone matters. ๐Ÿ’œ Everyone is special and unique, because they have lots of different ways they can help the world. Everyone has value.

In order for everyone to be able to help the world in their unique ways, we all need some basic things like homes ๐Ÿก and food ๐ŸŽ. The homes and food might look different depending on where you live in the world. But, everyone can work together to make sure we all have these important things.

To make it easy for people to work together, one of the things we need is a way to keep track of how they help the world each day. We call this "value". When you're nice to other kids, when you share toys, when you read a book, when you help make dinner ๐Ÿ, and when you eat your fruits ๐ŸŒ and veggies ๐Ÿฅ• โ€“ all those things have value!

The silly thing is, we don't start keeping track of that "value" until you're all grown up. And the even sillier thing is that once all the gown ups started keeping track of their value, they didn't remember any of things I just told you about! They forgot that being kind, helping others, and eating healthy has value! ๐Ÿ™ˆ They forgot that our special talents are supposed to be used to work together - making sure that everyone has a home and food to eat.

In fact, a lot of the talents adults have don't even get used to make the world better! Isn't that silly?

Instead, adults today mostly have jobs that make them do silly things. Often, they don't really like their jobs and it makes them unhappy. ๐Ÿคจ Some start 'businesses' like lemonade stands (but bigger). If people have had enough lemonade to drink, they try to convince them to buy more anyway... even though we know lemonade is a sugary treat we don't need very often!

And instead of the adults keeping track of their value for things that matter, someone else decides what their value is and gives them "money" ๐Ÿ’ต for doing a "job". Some adults need 2 or 3 jobs to have enough money for a home and food. And some adults do jobs there just isn't money available for - like being a parent or taking care of a grandparent.

Sadly, all this silly behavior by the adults has created some big problems in the world. โ˜น๏ธ There are lots of people who don't have homes or enough to eat. A lot of the farm animals are treated very badly ๐Ÿท and we're not very nice to mother earth โ€“ we throw away our plastic trash ๐Ÿฅค and cut down the rainforests ๐Ÿชต. People only do this because adults decided that getting money was the most important thing. And the only reason money is so important is because it's the only way to buy food ๐Ÿฒ or a house. And everyone needs those. A lot of adults feel trapped and they aren't sure what to do.

But you're so creative, I bet you could think of some new ways of doing things! Have any ideas?๐Ÿ’ก We think we can do a LOT better job, and the good news is that there are lots of smart adults that are already working together to solve those big problems.

We're pretty excited because we came up with some really neat ways that everyone, including kids, can write down the valuable ways they help the world each day AND be rewarded with a new kind of money called "Gratitude"! You don't need a "job" to make Gratitude, so no one will be left out. You just need to give value to the world in a meaningful way. Everyone can create Gratitude. ๐Ÿ’ง All the adults need to do is agree that we should use it for food, houses, clothing, and then everyone will feel a lot better because we'll all have enough! When adults aren't so stressed, they can solve those big problems much faster together. ๐Ÿค

What's even more cool is that we can also work together in new ways to solve those big problems and create things that are really nice for the world. There are lots of new tools we can use, most adults just haven't learned about them yet. But they can! Because computers are so awesome ๐Ÿคฉ we can connect with people all over the world. And use our Gratitude to build things that really help the world! ๐ŸŒŽ

With a new, kinder money, what would you give it to that could help the world?

In what ways have you felt called to give your special talents to contribute to a world you want so see?
